Governor Pillen Signs Proclamation Recognizing National Preparedness Month

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency

September 24, 2025 (LINCOLN, NEB.)  —  Governor Jim Pillen signed a proclamation declaring September as National Preparedness Month. The proclamation highlights the importance of preparing individuals, families and communities for emergencies and disasters.

“With this year's focus on 'Preparedness Starts at Home,' let's all commit to preparing our households for the unpredictable — from tornadoes and floods to winter storms and power outages,” said Gov. Pillen. “This shared responsibility protects our loved ones, honors the hard work of our emergency responders, and has the potential to mitigate the worst outcomes from unexpected events."

The 2025 theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” encourages Nebraskans to take proactive steps to ensure their households are ready to respond to a wide range of emergencies.

“The most important step families can take today is to sit down together and create a simple emergency plan — identify who to contact, where to go, and what to do in the event of a disaster,” said Major General Craig Strong. “Preparedness is not just a precaution; it is a responsibility every Nebraska family should take seriously.”

Joining Governor Pillen and Major General Strong at the signing ceremony were NEMA Assistant Director Erv Portis; Nebraska State Fire Marshal Doug Hohbein; Sandra Hobson, Program Director of the Nebraska Preparedness Partnership; and Suzanne Fortin, Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service.
