Lady Indians sweep Trinidad State at home

The McCook Community College volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the Region IX standings with a 3-0 sweep Saturday at home over Trinidad State.
MCC led 5-0 in the first set, and 6-2 lead to start the second set and finished out those sets winning 25-22 and 25-15.
The Lady Trojans got out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but MCC battled back to tie the set at 9-9 as both teams battled closely the rest of the way before MCC pulled out a 29-27 win.
“It was good to see us battle back and win that third set,” said MCC Assistant Coach Victoria Thomas. “These are the types of things we work on in practice and after getting up big in the first two sets we went to battle when it got tough in that third set.”
Freshman Peightan Swanson (freshman, Severance, Colo.) led the MCC attack with 12 kills while sophomore Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) had 10 kills, 10 digs and two service aces.
“Huge shoutout to Peightan in the second set because we were a little shaky on the attack and she came in and really went to work,” said Thomas. “And that’s the type of player we want at MCC, someone like that who can come in in the second set and take care of business.”
Leia Young (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) had five kills, three block assists and one solo block to go along with four digs. Freshman Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had four kills, eight digs, three block assists and two service aces.
Freshman Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had three kills, two block assists and two digs and sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) had four digs, one kill and one block assist.
“On Friday we had some issues with playing for each other but today we really got out there and each of those girls were playing for each other,” said Thomas.
Landree McNair (freshman, Chase County High School) had four kills, 13 assists, nine digs and two block assists. Freshman Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) led MCC with 14 assists to go along with six digs.
Freshman libero Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) had 11 digs to lead MCC.
Trinidad State falls to 8-9 and 1-1 in the region.
MCC improves to 5-10 and 2-0 in the region standings. Next up MCC will host Lamar College Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The Runnin’ Lopes are 0-12 on the year and 0-1 in Region IX South play.
