Lady Indians take two in Texas, now 6-0

GAINESVILLE, Texas – The Lady Indian volleyball team swept a pair of matches Friday at the opening day of the North Central Texas College Tournament. MCC downed Western Texas College 3-2 in the opening match and swept Dallas College-Brookhaven in the second match.

 

“Today went O.K. We had a tough time getting a good start in every set,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “I think the only set that we started off at a sprint and not a walk was the fifth set against Western Texas.”

 

MCC trailed 2-1 against the Lady Westerners before taking the fourth set 25-21 and the fifth set 15-12.

 

“We had some players come off the bench and do great things and that is always good to see knowing that we have depth to work with in certain situations,” said Kobza.

 

The Lady Indians improve to 6-0, West Texas College went to 3-3 on the season and Dallas-Brookhaven, the No. 2 ranked team in Division 3, falls to 2-4.

 

On Saturday, MCC will continue in the tournament taking on the hosts, North Central Texas (5-4) at 10 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. match with Wharton County Junior College (3-0).

 

GAME 1 - MCC 3, Western Texas College 2: The Lady Indians dropped the first set 22-25, won the second set 25-17, dropped the third set 23-25 before taking the final two sets 25-21 and 15-12.

 

A trio of freshmen led the offensive attack against the team from Snyder, Texas. Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) had 14 kills, six assist blocks, two solo blocks and two aces. Maggie Fiene (Murray, Neb. Conestoga H. S.) powered down 11 kills with a solo block and one assist block. Jade Powell (Sterling, Colo.) had 10 kills, two assist blocks and added six service aces.

 

Sophomore Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) was credited with six kills and one assist block while Bobbi Starkebaum (sophomore, Haxtun, Colo.) had five kills, two assist blocks and one solo block.

 

Freshman setter Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) had 48 assists to go along with three kills and two aces. Kamryn Slaugh (sophomore, Manila Utah) had a pair of service aces.

 

GAME 2 - MCC 3, Dallas-Brookhaven 0: The Lady Indians took the set 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22.

Sophomore Anna Richardson (Worland, Wyo.) led the attack on the Bears with nine kills. Powell followed with eight kills, one assist block and two aces. Phamotse was credited with four kills, four assist blocks, and one solo block.

 

Starkebaum had nine kills in the middle with two assist blocks, Young had three kills and freshman Tanna Bailey (Stoneham, Colo.) had three service aces with one kill.

 

Ortiz had 34 assists and five assist blocks, and freshman Paula Urizar (Guatemala City, Guatemala) fired three aces from the service line.
