MCC Baseball takes 17-5 win for third straight in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The McCook Community College baseball team won their third straight game with a 17-5 decision Thursday over Southwestern Christian College. It was the team’s seventh win in the last eight games.
“It was good to finish off the trip with a ‘W’,” said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. I didn’t feel like we played our best, but we had few guys that had some good performances.”
The Eagles broke out on top with a two-out, three-run homer in the first to lead 3-0.
MCC took the lead back in the third with a four-run effort starting with a two-base Eagle error and capitalized with an RBI single by freshman Carter Smith (Ottawa, Canada) a single by Cory Wouters (sophomore Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and a three-run home run by Dalton Berg (freshman, Frederick, Colo.).
“We got a big swing from Dalton early that I felt kind of changed the momentum then our offense got going a bit,” said Olsen.
SWC tied the game on a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the inning.
Wouters pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
The Indians responded in the fourth with a leadoff bunt single by freshman Landon McKillip (Lamoni, Iowa) who reached second on a throwing error. The Eagles committed a fielding error on the next at bat and Smith doubled in both runners to lead 6-4. After Berg walked, sophomore Owen Glover (Elderslie, New South Wales) lined a three-run home run to left field and freshman Mason Regan (Centennial, Colo.) followed with a solo shot to put MCC up 10-4.
SWC manufactured a run in the fourth, but MCC got that run back with a leadoff double in the fifth by Nathan Hutchison (sophomore, Riverton, Wyo.) and an RBI single by Wouters to make it a 11-5 game.
Freshman Julian Alvarez (Vaughan, Ontario) pitched 2.1 innings for the Indians, allowing one earned run on one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
In the sixth, McKillip singled home Tyler Reyburn (freshman, Frederick, Colo.) who had a one-out single, Hutchison tripled in two runs and Wouters hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 15-5 game. The Indians added a final run in the seventh with doubles by Glover and sophomore Brogan Barr OF (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.).
Oklahoma native Parker Wilson (freshman, Tulsa, Okla.) pitched the final two innings for MCC, allowing no runs on two hits, one walk and one strikeout.
“Julian and Parker both had really good outings out of the bullpen,” said Olsen.
MCC banged out 15 hits with two-hit games from Hutchison, Smith, Wouters, Glover and McKillip. Berg, Glover and Smith all had three RBIs.
Southwestern Christian College JV goes to 1-8 on the season.
MCC improves to 10-11 and the team will continue its string of 16 consecutive road with five more games next week. On Tuesday MCC will be in Liberal, Kan. to take on Seward County Community College at 2 p.m. then go to Las Vegas, N.M. to begin Region IX play March 21-22 with two games each day starting at 1 p.m.
“We have one non-region game left to get ready,” said Olsen. “It should be a good week ahead of us, things are taking shape a bit so we hope we can continue to improve.”
