MCC golfers eighth at Iowa tournament
ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Competing against NAIA schools, the McCook Community College golf team finished eighth at the 36-hole meet at Wednesday the Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City, Iowan, hosted by Northwestern Iowa.
MCC shot rounds of +23 and +18 to finish at +41 for the day.
“The guys really had to battle the elements today, with the wind blowing a consistent 25 mph,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “Although the team score and placing wasn’t what we were after, having played 36 holes in one day again is only going to benefit us next week at the region tournament.”
The host school finished with two teams atop the team standings. Northwestern Iowa A won with a seven-under score for the day. The Northwestern B team was 24 shots back in second place.
Sophomore Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) shot a one-under second round to finish at +4 on the day which put him in eighth place in the individual scoring.
Matt Grimonprez (sophomore Wasquehal, France) was -1 under through 18 holes but fell back to +6 on the second round. He finished in a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) had rounds of +5 and +8. Freshman Cole Graham (McCook) had rounds of +15 and +6 while sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) carded rounds of +14 and +7.
“Wanting to place well at every event is part of being a competitor, but the one event that really matters is next week in Loveland, where a shot at qualifying for nationals is on the line,” said Case. “We’ll use the time until then to get things as sharp as we can in order to give ourselves the best chance at nationals as a team.”
The Region IX tournament at Loveland, Colo., will be April 24-25.
