MCC golfers sixth in first tournament
TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College golf team opened the season with a six-place finish in the two-day Eastern Wyoming Tournament at Cottonwood Golf Course -- the home of the defending Region IX West District champions.
The Lancers shot six-over par 582 for the tournament and finished Friday nine shots ahead of second-place Central Wyoming. A second Eastern Wyoming team placed third with a two-day 599.
The Indians had rounds of 317 and 321 to finish at +62 and a two-day score of 638.
“It was nice to get our first-year guys some experience this week, however the team score was not what anyone wanted to start the year," said MCC Coach Grant Case.
Freshman Louis Yin (Tainan, Taiwan) had a top 15 finish in his first tournament and a +9 showing. He had rounds of 77 and 75 for a 153. Rawlins County freshman Jeb Kastens was two shots back of Yin and had rounds of 76 and 79.
“The tournament was highlighted by Jeb’s 76 on Thursday, in very windy conditions, as well as Louis’s 75 on Friday,” said Case.
Freshman Braiden Portie (Arvada, Colo.) opened his collegiate career with rounds of 79 and 85. Sophomore Cole Graham (McCook) had rounds of 84 and 83.
Joackym Mahy (freshman Andenne, Belgium) shot a 90 Thursday and came back with an 84 Friday while MHS alum Jalen Collicott (McCook) started his season with rounds of 91 and 85.
“There’s a lot of areas for everyone to improve before traveling to Riverton next week,” said Case.
MCC will participate in the Central Wyoming Tournament next Thursday and Friday in Riverton, Wyo.
