MCC Volleyball improves to 3-0 in region

The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up their fourth straight win Tuesday with a 3-0 sweep over Lamar College in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first set and won 25-11, 25-17, 25-13 to improve to 3-0 in the Region IX South standings.

“We have a really good group of players and even thought everyone’s not always seeing the court, we still have players that can come in and make a difference,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “And tonight, that really showed.”

Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) the sophomore transfer from Vincennes (an Indiana junior college) led MCC with 13 kills to go along with two block assists and one ace. Freshman Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had seven kills and two block assists.

Freshman Peightan Swanson (freshman, Severance, Colo.) was credited with five kills while sophomore Audrey Holm (Paxton, Colo.) had three kills and one block assist.

In the middle, freshman Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) led MCC with four block assists with one kill and a team-high four service aces. Bobbi Starkebaum (freshman, Haxtun, Colo.) and two block assists and one kill.

Passing and defensive statistics were not available.

MCC rotated three freshmen setters throughout the match including Landree McNair (Imperial), Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) and Libby Cole (Grant) with Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) handling the libero role. McNair had six kills and three block assists with three service aces. Nelson had one service ace.

The Runnin’ Lopes picked up their first win of the year Saturday at home but with Tuesday’s loss to MCC Lamar falls to 1-13 on the season and 1-2 in the Region IX South standings.

After a 3-0 start in the region, MCC improves to 7-10 on the season but the schedule gets a lot tougher on the road for the next week. Kobza’s crew has three matches against what looks like three teams challenging for the top of the standings by season’s end. On Thursday, MCC travels to Sterling, Colo. to face No. 5-ranked Northeast Community College (16-3) in a 7 p.m. match, followed on Saturday with a trip to Scottsbluff to face Western Nebraska (4-16) at 2 p.m. The rivalry match against North Platte (6-11) is set for Oct. 1 in North Platte.

MCC’s next home match will be Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. against Western Nebraska.
