MCC Volleyball sweeps Otero for 2-0 weekend

“This was a good way to finish the weekend,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “We found some strong areas within our team and then areas we still need to improve.”

Freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) topped MCC in the kill charts with 14 and added one assist block and two ace serves. Jade Powell (freshman, Sterling, Colo.) added seven kills, seven digs, one assist block and one ace.

Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) had six kills three and three assist blocks. Maggie Fiene (freshman, Murray, Neb.) was credited with four kills, two assist blocks and a dig.

Sophomore Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had three kills and two assist blocks while sophomore Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) had two kills and five assist blocks.

Cheyanne Ortiz (freshman, Pueblo, Colo.) led MCC with 17 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Zoe Mulholland (Lander, Wyo.) had 16 assists, three digs and led the team with four service aces.

Anna Richardson (sophomore, Worland, Wyo.) also had nine digs with two assists and three service aces. Freshman Tanna Bailey (Stoneham, Colo.) had one dig and one ace.

Otero College falls to 3-8. MCC improves to 9-10. On Tuesday, MCC will be in North Platte to take on the Knights (7-3) in a 6 p.m. match.

“We have one practice before Tuesday and need to lock in a few of our skills,” said Kobza.

North Platte had a 1-1 weekend in Colorado, sweeping Otero Friday and losing a five-set match to Trinidad Saturday, dropping the fifth set to the Trojans 15-17. On Friday, MCC won a five-set match against Trinidad, winning the fifth set 19-17.  

The Lady Indians return home next weekend for a Friday match (6 p.m.) against Lamar and a Saturday 1 p.m. matinee against Southeast Community College.
